The crankshaft starts moving around excessively causing excessive wear on the bearings. It can happen on any car, but it was notorious on the 2nd Gen DSMs. (Eclipses)

Good security cameras is the answer. Any rental co. should have good cameras. That way they will be able to prove when and where the damage occurred.
