I find it amusing that he claims to work for a major network hardware vendor, and claims that no one wants or asks for the kind of traffic shaping I exampled, and yet the largest network equipment manufacturer (Cisco) has a whole product line of traffic shaping modules.

BTW, the fact that you stated you work for one of these providers immediately colours you with their brush.

The hypothetical that I am describing is not only not very difficult to implement, it is cheap. I have a sub $100 that does full traffic shaping based on any choice of origin, destination, packet type, protocol, MAC and others. It works very well.
