They had planned to do the series final, or the last movie, I forget which, as live action, but it never came to fruition. So they may already have a start on it.
Yes, you need to keep up people’s expectations. To represent a future that looks less advanced than now is just dumb and handicaps your storytelling unnecessarily. Well, the Enterprise D was basically a cruise ship - families and all. Voyager and Enterprise E were more like warships, and look more “realistic”.
By all means, lets stick to the formula Star Trek everyone wants, that gave us the heavily criticized Voyager and the cancelled Enterprise, instead of trying something new.
