A lot of what you describe sounds familiar to me, and makes sense based on what I remember... I recall backtracking a lot in Banjo Kazooie, and hitting parts of the game that told me I had to go back to proceed forward. Mario 64, too.

It’s a gamble any time you change jobs. Most of the people currently making their living from Youtube didn’t start out doing that.
