A manga about the moral drama would be boring and political. Much more engaging is to present the two sides battling each other, and you can see how well you relate to each side. The Netflix version watered this down to where even L, who represented justice, broke down and went Psycho.
Light is supposed to be evil from the start. In the manga and anime, he never quite has a human aspect to him. He plans on being Kira from the beginning, and never struggles with the whole “should I cross this line” that the horribly bad White Light does.
