There was a sweet spot between around 1959 and 1972 where quality was the highest it would be until 1992-2004. The ‘64 Chevrolets and ‘66 Fords were the best built cars for decades to come. On the smaller side, AMC had a high mark in 1966, Datsun caught people’s attention in 1967, Mercedes-Benz set world standards

Although to be fair, the Chrysler interiors I have had usually look cheap but don't rattle too bad.  My ram from that era looks cheap inside with 5 shades of tan but it's quiet and the seat is comfortable

He worked in a body shop in the 80s/90s. 

I remember the 80's class divide quite well, you either owned domestic and were on the middle to lower rungs (and staying there), or Japanese and moving on up, or German, indicating you’d made it and had the keys to the cookie jar. VW sat right between Japanese and German, and Hyundai/Yugo meant you had bad credit.
