Put simply, Handcent isn't the prettiest app. You can give it customizable themes, which is great, but if you like your apps to have a nice UI to match the feature set, you can probably do better than Handcent. It also doesn't have some non-SMS features like voice calls that Hangouts can offer.

I would be cautious of clear-coating a controller. Probably the best approach if you decide to try this would be to get some flat clear coat instead of glossy (controllers are typically shiny plastic). Then I'd also research whether or not it was UV-resistant, as that'd yellow the clear coat over time.
