I stand corrected, Theodosius II was just a boy in 410. So, I wonder, what was his regency thinking? Did they just write the western empire off at that point? Granted, they had Huns and Persians to deal with, but still, a happy Gothic army would’ve have proved useful against at least the Huns.

Fellow history PhD, and I applaud taking history to the masses. Although I studied modern Germany, Roman history was one of my many side interests. In fact, my tendency to get derailed by my side interests is a big reason why I am not academia anymore.

I’ve been listening to this podcast. It’s quite good. He’s taking a nuanced view, looking at motivations and not treating the Goths as a single tribe of mindless barbarians.
