Yes, books and movies do it. But the problem with anime is that series and mangas come out sooooo often that it dilutes the medium. In a given year, there can be a dozen anime about mechs, chyunni, you name it.

Think about it the other way. Everyone can see how much they have left to their goal and nobody wanted to donate the extra $28 he needed. If I was in his shoes I would see that as a personal failure even if I made another account and donated money to save my own project, it still means there aren't enough supporters
