Late to the game, but I think you've all pieced it together: this way, Natalie now has the only hidden immunity idol (Keith doesn't play his until Jon does) and is in a 5-3 majority instead of a 4-4 rock draw.
I think the success of the past few episodes proves the resilience of the show in terms of format and production. The game itself can provide moments and interest and the people who work on the show are experts at their craft.
