Absolutely, the best part about this MMO is it’s support for solo experiences. This is honestly the only MMO I like simply because it has such a great balance for soloing AND group play

I would say you can certainly play it that way. There’s plenty to do solo, and won’t want for content on that front. There will be some dungeons and trials you will have to do with groups, but you can play this game for months easily just doing the main story content and side quests.

I’ve always played mostly solo and it’s entirely possible, especially once you hit the newest expansion where you can engage in the trust system. 

There are definitely a lot of Solo parts of the Main Story Quests (MSQ) but you also will have to jump into 4 man dungeons and 8 person trials (single mega-boss to kill) to finish up lots of parts of the MSQ. As a new player I would take advantage of the free trial. Being able to get any/all jobs up to level 35 really gives you a good feel as to how the game plays. Granted you’ll be playing ARR content which is old/slow, but getting to know the mechanics is what you want.

You can play most of the game solo but sometimes your have to team up with people for a dungeon or a trial to move the story along.

It's largely solo, the dungeons will party match you. But the way the story revolves around your character in particular is pretty great
