Vito and Burnette were very, very good musicians.

It’s interesting that you say that. I was a tall and skinny boy who grew into a tall and skinny teenager, and I look back on photographs from 7th or 8th grade (1991-1992), and I’m blown away by the fact that none of the clothing I wear came close to fitting. Everything was huge. The seams between the shoulder and arm…
I saw him at around the same time, and he blew me away. His album Out of the Cradle is as good as anything he made with Fleetwood Mac.
Tango in the Night is my favorite Fleetwood Mac album, mainly because of Christine’s tracks. “Little Lies” and “Everywhere” are as good as songwriting got in the 80s.
If you don’t know the B-sides—particularly “Down Endless Street”—get thee to YouTube.
I sincerely and honestly hope that Ms. Furtado will write for Jezebel more often. This was a terrific piece.
Of course, what he doesn’t mention is that the song was actually written by Max Martin and Shellback, our favorite Swedes. (Yes, Timberlake has a writing credit, but there’s a pretty significant part of me that thinks that credit is of the “change a word, get a third” variety.)
Me too, and I hate myself for it.
It’s always a thrill when my favorite character actors—William H. Macy, CCH Pounder, Denis O’Hare, Viola Davis, Wendell Pierce, Roma Maffia, Željko Ivanek—start getting the credit we all know they deserve.
I was so happy to see him in Moonlight. I was so happy to see him in House of Cards. I’m just happy to see him in anything.
And Janet Jackson, too. I still think Rhythm Nation: 1814 is a more important album than Beyoncé will ever make.
I drove an ‘85 Land Cruiser for most of my last year in high school. (My dad had bought it used in 1986, and it was our “winter car” from then on.) It lasted until 2000, when his mechanic warned him that the undercarriage was so badly rusted that, if his foot slipped off the clutch, it might go through the floor. He…
Moonlight is stunning. I watched it via a friend’s Academy screener (shhh, don’t tell). Be prepared to be exhausted when you’re done...but also be prepared to be blown away.
I had a moment this morning, as I stood in the bathroom listening to NPR, in which I thought to myself, “Trump isn’t going to approve federal disaster relief for people in Northern California because they didn’t vote for him.”
My favorite of Al’s albums was L is for Lover, a criminally-underappreciated masterpiece produced by Nile Rodgers. The title track was written by Green Gartside and David Gamson (of Scritti Politti), but my favorite cut is “Says,” a song written by Philippe Saisse that required Al to sing in both French and English.…
Trump thinks it’s pronounced “Shar-day.”
God, do I agree.
Chris Murphy, my senator, is doing some great things these days. Maybe a VP slot?
Just did the same. Thanks.
They did collaborate with Whitney Houston...well, in a manner of speaking, at least.
