I think the popular kids, by getting attention, become magnets for anger in schools, and that must suck. A lot of times popular kids are really dynamic and interesting, as this girl appears to be, because those qualities can make someone confident, and confidence=popularity on some level most of the time.

My understanding of the progression was, she was bullied, she and others stood up to that bullying, she wore the dress to highlight her defiance and that led to her selection as prom queen because people like when they can demonstrate in clear and dramatic fashion the party with whom they side.

I have tried to say this several times and keep getting dismissed. I am always down for a friendly debate around race, but that is not going to happen here in the Jezebel comments. So it’s dismiss dismiss dismiss and LOLWUTs for now.

I don’t think this person is saying race doesn’t exist. My interpretation is that he/she is wishing for a time when it’s irrelevant, and that it is dumb that it still gets factored in with how we treat each other.

Worth noting that Kanye had a solidly middle-class childhood, even accompanying his english professor mother to China and attending school there while she taught at Nanjing University. Not exactly a circumscribed, slum existence.
