"Matthew" is autobiographical; it's about John's mother-in-law's death. You're absolutely right that it's as raw as the Mountain Goats get.

Watching the West Wing for the first time, many years later, I knew that this was coming just through what I'd heard about the show. If anything, that made the scenes even more unbearable. I was practically watching through my fingers whispering "no no no no no no".
