Yeah, I’m just wondering if the internal justification could have been that she truly thought she was helping, and nothing else was as important. Like I said, that mercy in this case was bigger than the law.

Then you either don’t understand depression or you don’t understand the complexity of human beings.
It wasn’t about her—it was about him.
Same reason. She may have believed she understood his pain and thought that shallow changes in mood or circumstance didn’t affect the underlying issue.
This is my view. As a sufferer of depression herself, she may have acutely understood the dimension of pain that her boyfriend was in, and truly thought that the only way to help him was to allow him to stop the pain once and for all.
I’m wondering if perhaps she did truly think she was ending his suffering, and that her encouragment wasn’t out of spite or malice, but actually out of some pretty complex empathy that we’re just not as a society ready for.
