The thing is, DS9 is only dark in comparison to other Trek shows. It's still nowhere near as I*N*T*E*N*S*E as most modern SF, like the modern BSG, or, yes, AbramsTrek. AbramsTrek isn't all dark and damaged, but it does have that modern thing where the MELODRAMA is amped up to eleven.

I think it's entirely possible to make a smart SF movie that's also exciting. It happens all the time. The two Mayer-directed Star Trek movies captured the spirit of Trek on the big screen, and I don't think you can argue they were boring or lacking in action. The other OS movies have issues, but there's stuff in

Shimmerman is great. As I said above I just watched "Far Beyond the Stars" and he's a standout in that one.

While the Jem'Hadar are hard to beat, the Dominion's not really a military power; it's clear that they prefer to win via infiltration and manipulation (which is only natural, since they're run by shape-shifters).

I just watched "Far Beyond the Stars", and DAMN. Alaimo actually looks CREEPIER without makeup.

I enjoyed Abrams' Trek, but it's empty, flashy and superficial. You can argue that's what Trek needed at this point after becoming stodgy and stilted for many years. But watching DS9 all the way through thanks to these reviews have shown me how much richer, deeper and more interesting Trek can be than so many other SF

Thinking about it, I think the Tal Shi'ar/Obsidian Order invasion is something they were setting up for further down the road (possibly the season finale?), and they decided to say "hell with it" and just pay it off. Which was a smart decision, though I think it also explains why the Dominion storyline slows down a

I'm up to season 5, and at this point DS9 is using just about every Trek race better than TNG did, except the Borg and MAYBE the Klingons. And it's close with the Klingons.

I think any complaints about how the show is using Garak will be out the window next week, Zack. Shit is about to get real.

"Intolerance for intolerance" is one of those rhetorical traps that doesn't actually mean anything. Like the old saw about God not being able to create a  rock so big that even he can't lift it, and therefore not being omnipotent. It's a trick of language.
