I don’t have any conclusive answers but I do remember reading a business case about the Smart car that might be relevant. (This is all old memories so some details are bound to be incorrect)

The Smart was released about 10 years before the iQ (in most markets). When a product is appealing to a niche market the first mover advantage is a big deal. Only so many people want a car this small, if you needed a tiny vehicle you would have already bought a Smart car when the iQ came out.

Fully agree! Buffalo is a cool city with a lot of neat things to see. Nothing amazing enough to make it a destination but an excellent day trip city when you are in the area.
