It gets better in the second half once it gets more into the backstories of the characters. I thought it was a slog at first as well, but glad I stuck through it to the end.

I feel the same but different - I couldn't get into The Sopranos because of the violence. It's definitely not a show to binge watch. I watch a lot of violent movies and TV, but there was something extra upsetting about how it was portrayed on the Sopranos where I just couldn't stomach it.
It's like most of Lynch's work, which is taking a fairly conventional idea or story and adding on some surreal/horror elements to it. I'm no fan of Wal Mart, but a I stated elsewhere here, Ward 7 has no grocery stores or major retail. It's one of the very few places a Wal Mart would be of benefit.
