Plenty of abusive and neglectful people are mentally ill or in poor physical health, but recognizing one’s mental illness and treating it are what responsible parents would do.

Not sure about “spiritual healers”, but I have heard of stigma within the black community towards psychiatry, psychotherapy, etc. and that many go to their pastors for guidance. This is mostly just hearsay from people I’ve been in programs with though.
