This is a common misconception with the MBA because the "non-standard" form-factor of the MBA's SSD. It does use SATA, but the connector is called mSATA, or microSATA, which kind of looks like mini PCI express.
SSD is a great upgrade for people like yourself who have older computers, not just for performance, but because you take it with you when you move to the next machine.
HDD/SSD data throughput/performance shouldn't have any affect on CPU activity or temperature under load. Did you clean the dust out of it when you swapped in the SSD? That's a much more likely cause for it running cooler.
Pretty much any SSD will absolutely bury any spinning drive, except for the very early off-brand ones which were little more than thumbdrives with sata connections.
The Intel drives use MLC, SLC was not used in consumer drives.

Ya the connector is definitely mSATA, but it looks like the Tosh/Samsung drives are (size-wise) not standard mSATA spec like the Intel 310 - [www.intel.com]
