Ugh. Pain is your body’s way of saying “STOP! I’m about to get injured!!” Or worse, that you already are injured. Some soreness after exercising *can* be OK (or it can also be a low-grade injury), but pain? It is never, ever OK and certainly not beneficial.
That really sucks and I’m sorry you had to endure that. I’ve encountered plenty of people like that and I definitely identify with you. I’ll push myself too hard in an effort to keep or meet a certain standard and wind up doing myself harm—not just with fitness, but with a lot of things.
Years ago, I had a friend who was trying to get on the show. While he was already very overweight, he was actually trying to gain more weight because of what the producers said they wanted, which was obviously a spectacle.
