Just curious, why do you think his NASA record would paint him as un-american? NASA tends to be pretty even split when it comes to bi-partisan support.

Canada actually has TWO astronauts in government at the moment. Marc Garneau, who you've already named, AND Julie Payette, who is our Governor General.  Her role is not however, elected.

He’s an actual freaking astronaut! The answer to the question “what do you do” when you’re at a bar is always “astronaut.” Never say something like “well, um, I’m in hazardous waste.” That’s a horrible opening line.
