The thing with TFA is that J.J. needed to play safe. It had been more than 30 years since the original trilogy and the prequels tried to innovate but sucked, so he needed to make a weird reboot/remake/sequel thing and it was a supreme success, so now they can do whatever they want.

Luke and Rey time travel to when Kylo and the Knights of Ren destroyed the New Jedi Order, preventing him from turning to the dark side and Han dying. Jar Jar emerges as the new leader of the Knights of Ren. They have to travel to the future when Jar Jar rules as the new Emperor and they need to destroy him once and…
