I think the real test would be to compare their growth to the average population. It’s not an evolutionary leap that is creating the size changes. It’s better training, better diets and (yes) drugs.

There’s another factor related to that—a lot of players have complained that the crackdown on high tackling (because brain trauma is bad PR) have led to more knee and ankle injuries. I don’t know if that’s true or not, but a torn ACL is more noticeable and keeps a player out longer than a concussion does.

I think his point is that HGH fosters larger muscle growth, which puts extra strain on bones and joints (causing injury). Traditional steroids did the same thing while also hurting the structure of your bones.
