I've been using a 5.5" screen LG Optimus for over a year and it's awesome! Massive battery, full web pages, eye-popping video, and it fits fine in my front pocket. - (Though I live in Portland, I don't wear skinny hipster jeans)

Phablets have huge batteries and easily outlast their smaller siblings. You might not need a battery case.

You should try the duffle bags with wheels and the telescoping handle. They are harder to find in the overhead bin size and they of course don't protect breakables, but it's nice to be able to roll heavy loads...
