I volunteered at the Men’s US Open at Merion, and had to pay (gear was crappy that year IMO). The money was well worth it. For the volunteer pass, you could bring your cell phone all days ( you couldn’t as a general patron), could go ‘behind the scenes’ a bit, and getting to the course was a breeze.
