I started using transmission way back when it just came out, years ago. I remember that it was way faster than other BT clients for mac at the time but it was hated in most (private) torrent trackers because it wasn't standards compliant or something similar and it took code from something else without credit. @Whitson Gordon: Have you tried Cog? I'm on a mac, too, and since it's old iTunes effectively murders it everytime. You should give it a spin, it has relatively broad format support and very low CPU and memory consumption.
