They’re both really good. Many people rank 2 ahead of 1 (probably because of the wider variety and Yoshi), but 1 is the better game, IMO. Much more complex level design, new enduring characters, and a decent story to boot.

The story is really good as well—his wife and sister are in the group with him, and he wrote the song about his infant daughter.

This song was a definite front-runner for Eurovision—shame it got cancelled.
