Point being, it's fine if it doesn't shoot NATO spec ammo right? .223 is spec'ed for civilian use, so a semi-auto-gas-operated rifle chambered in that should be acceptable.

If pistol grips are a problem, I've no problems switching to the M1A1 platform. The heavy metal class might be more expensive to compete in (TWICE THE AMMO COSTS!), but it's sure as hell more fun than tac-ops/irons.

Rifle owners do have to pay more than handgun owners, reloading costs per 9mm: ~12c, per .223: .26c

Neither do civilian AR-15's. NATO rounds are too high pressured and will often cause the chamber to explode in .223 rated rifles. .22LR will kill a person as well.

While I am in favor of gun control, i.e. mental health checks, background checks, registering firearms, waiting periods, etc, I do not believe a complete ban is fair.

Back in GA I've fired over 20K rounds of .223, .308, 12GA, 9mm, .45, ONE .50AE, and whatever the hell the Garande shoots in USPSA/IPSC matches. No fatalities either, though I did accidentally shoot down a small tree once....
