The point of a government is to look out for things that we, as individuals, are incapable of looking out for on our own. Basic needs aren’t on that list.

I would not trade my 401k/Roth accounts for a pension. The math depends on your income level/savings rate but at some point given average market returns (~7%) it makes more financial sense to invest/control your own money.

Amazon claims the average salary for the Long Island City location is supposed to be 150k. It’s not a fulfillment center. These aren’t “struggling” employees.

It’s funny that you mention Seattle. The anti-homelessness measure that failed there is another prime example. Progressives put that thing together knowing damn well that there’d be blowback and when it came the progressives caved. Then, because this is how they operate, they blamed Amazon for the measure’s failure.
