the writers on her show are really good and deserve a huge portion of the credit for how good the show is.

that's pissing me off so much.

there was no emotional payoff to anything in that final season, it was just sentimental crap with maybe 1 laugh an episode

If you mean the "because they asked too many FUCKING questions!" line about why his other marriages failed, that happened earlier this season. The ensuing conflict with Ruth is what, arguably, sets him down the path towards this episode of mental illness we're entering.
