I agree with that. I’ve also applied it to people I’m dating. If all of their ex’s were crazy, or even if it was only one ex but he only ever talks about how “crazy” she was, that’s a red flag.

I have one friend who leans Republican with whom I can have respectful debates about these things with. But it’s sad when these conversations that could be so productive turn into petty name calling.

Exactly. My two mentors gently pointed out to me that she had a lot of other ex-girl friends in her life and she was the common denominator. I started seeing things differently about her version of the stories.

Yeah, the dialoging was great. I was young, 19 at the time, and she was so helpful in so many areas. And those two women bosses were amazing mentors for me. All of it helped with the friend situation.

I think your best bet is to document and report to HR when necessary. Be specific about the effects it’s having on you and your work. But definitely document. People like that usually have a way of becoming apparent to management and get themselves fired.

I’ve had a few friend breakups, and they suck. It’s hard to talk to people about it sometimes because they think it should just be easy to cut someone off. But it can feel like a breakup from a romantic partner. The worst friend breakup I had went something like this:
