Actually, it doesn't have solar panels. It is powered by a plutonium-fueled RTG (Radioisotope Thermoelectric Generator) that turns the heat from the decaying plutonium fuel into electricity. It has an estimated useful life span of about 14 years, although Curiosity's design life is only 2 years.

Actually, it launched November 26, 2011. Design and testing started early 2004 with most of the design finalize by the end of 2008.

Yep... which is why each of the two main imaging cameras has an 8Gb buffer, sufficient for holding over 5,500 images.
