I don't see your central point here... You start out by wondering whether all of the things that the author wrote were (strictly) necessary, and moved on to the "unique experience" and finished at a metaphor about games not giving players their "manual transmission" as you say.

Yeah it works for their family-centric type of feelings. I don't think it would work for most other companies...
