Even though I could never afford it (obviously) I think this is ridiculously awesome. I feel like Jalopnik currently has the biggest disconnect in terms of how writers see their takes being received, and what their actual reading audience is. Most of us like to see cool stuff, especially if it was repurposed like this.

Sounds like a normal AWD car with a center diff. Having all wheels powered all the time isn’t good for fuel mileage; hence why part-time AWD (e.g. Haldex type) was devised.

You just don’t gain anything from a hybrid setup other than going electric over residential areas to make it quieter. There’s no regenerative braking when you fly so you are just adding weight and complexity for nothing. Anecdotally I speak a little from experience as the sponsor of my grad project kept wanting to

It’s mostly just outrageously difficult and expensive to engineer and manufacture something as complex as an automobile, and trying to do so with only low-margin, inexpensive vehicles just increases the challenge.

Manufacturers are hiding the highest cost of purchasing a car behind longer term loan, 72 to 84 months. This is madness. Cost of borrowing aside (which is terrible over such period of time), cars are much more reliable than before but after 7 years, not sure how much your $25K SUV is really worth.

I think the petition and uproar about it is silly, but you’re totally right that this article is either incredibly poorly researched OR purposely misleading. Maybe both.

I was all prepared to defend the WRX by mentioning it has full time AWD. You can’t compare the fuel economy directly to a 2WD or part time haldex type setup, there’s always going to be more drivetrain loss with a Subaru.

Quit with the class warfare stuff. Musk is doing more for humanity than nearly anybody in history. Don't bean envious hater.

They aren’t actually responding only to a 6 month old event, they are primarily talking specifically about the Build Back Better meeting that just happened last Wednesday 1/26. This was specifically mentioned in the petition actually and is hard to miss. Not sure why your report does not mention that at all?

Hate Trump. Grudgingly respect Musk.

Yes if you’re a jalopnik cretin .

Only thing worse than the tesla stans is the people who talk nonstops shit about tesla stans as if that’s any more interesting or a better way to spend one’s time. Hate and love are two sides of the coin called obsession.

Yeah, democrats need to win Michigan, and snubbing non-union auto manufacturers is a pretty easy way to score points with Michigan voters.

No. This jackass is a lawbreaker and will be punished. And should be.

A massive infrastructure bill just passed Congress. The one Biden is there to discuss.

“But they also knew that if they raised taxes to fix any of the crumbling infrastructure, they’d all lose their jobs and be raked over the coals for being freedom hating tax and spend politicians.”

Are crossovers considered SUVs though? We should just break them out into another category if we want to get more accurate numbers. Car/SUV/Truck is just cramming too many things that aren’t really comparable into the same category.

Normally these days I’m in the “Runs and drives under $5k, Nice Price” camp. But with a Toyota pickup of this vintage there needs to be a picture of the bottom first.

What the heck is with these comments today?

Wow. I remember hearing about that but didn’t connect the name.
