Are you Southern, by any chance? The Southern side of my family did this same thing, but with "Curtis". I didn't realize until late in my teens that Mac, and Skip, and a few more were all actually named "Curtis".

Ridicule is not constructive criticism. Making people hate themselves is not constructive. And most weight loss ads on TV are for quick-fix bullshit that are terrible for your health. Also, the message of anti-smoking ads is "If you smoke, you should quit for your health". The message of weight loss ads is "If you're

I was actually objecting to your meanspirited assumption that if a woman gains weight it's her fault and never because of genetics.

You were responding to commenter who was talking about women who 'lose a ton of weight for their wedding'. For a LOT of women that includes crazy crash diets- especially since it usually means losing that ton of weight in a very short period of time, which is rarely healthy or sustainable.

Yeah, when people lose weight on crazy crash diets they gain weight back and it brings them back to their genetic normal weight. Your point?

"I think the real problem is that we've become to accepting of overweight people and their unhealthy lifestyles because we can't hurt anyone's feelings nowadays."

It's a big leap from "being clean and presentable" to "losing weight be skinny for your prom". One is a reasonable standard and one is ridiculous. You can participate in society but refuse to participate in what you believe to be it's most ridiculous standards; you can even work to CHANGE those standards. It's not

"You can't just refuse to participate because it's not fair".

It's not about what she suggests, it's about why she's suggesting it. Giving advice on how to lead an overall healthy lifestyle is great, and that's what Michelle Obama does. It's not helpful to suggest that people need to eat healthy because it will make them look good for a certain event; that just encourages them

Also, before the trolls get to it: OBESITY IS KILLING US ALL. WHY DOES JEZEBEL WANT EVERYONE TO BE FAT?!?!

Why bother eating all this healthy food? Just install a feeding tube. Good practice for your wedding.

She's not saying that dancing on the bar is a "right" in itself, she's saying that she was discriminated against unfairly. She paid to get into the bar, and everyone else was able to dance on the bar; not allowing her to is discriminatory. Comparing it to the right to Health Care is missing the point.

And you better not be dancing on any tables, either. What is this, Random Judginess day on Jezebel?

Sigh. I had no issues with my neighbor almost all of this year, which is rare because my roommate and I are both musicians and he is the loudest person on earth; finally no complaints due to my being a total drill sergeant and yelling at him constantly to keep quiet. Then the neighbor's girlfriend moved in, and she

Me too!

I think most atheists would say that you're not completely an atheist if you're 'spiritual', actually, since 'spirits' are based in a non-scientific belief system. That's why I don't call myself 100% atheist. I do really like the phrase 'Atheist with a reverent view towards the universe", though.

I have noticed just moving through my 20s that a lot of my friends who were really hardcore aggressive athiests have ended up associating with some kind of religion, or mellowing out into 'mostly atheist but sort of spiritual' (which is where I am, currently). I think a lot of people start by rejecting everything

Well, I just wasted a good 20 minutes on that website.

Well, this is feeding into my paranoia that I'll never find a lasting relationship. Damn my good career luck!

I've often thought that a large part of the reason I deal with a lot of romantic frustration is that the things that work for me career-wise don't work when it comes to romance. Or it's more like, in my career I've found that if I'm assertive and direct about what I want, and work my ass off to deserve it, I'll be
