I really want to meet just one person who has bought his book, and read it, entirely because they were interested in reading it. I mean, WHAT? WHY? I feel like I am an entirely different breed of human than the people who would be interested in reading this book.

Ridiculous body standards are ridiculous.

Yeah, me too, but "providing financial support" to me sounds like it implies a bit more than the occasional loan when someone's in a tight spot. It sounds like it's going come out that he bought her plane tickets and all sorts of expensive shit in addition to giving her a lot of money. If he'd given her a loan or two

"Financial support and friendship". Riiiight. Because it's totally common for people to provide financial support to their platonic friends.

I'm in Brooklyn; that might explain it. At least where I am, most bars are pretty mixed sexuality; it's not uncommon for any bar to be about 50/50 straight to queer ratio. So gay bars (the ones I've been in at least) are mostly just for meeting people to date/hook up with/whatever, and that atmosphere turns me off

True; most of my gay friends don't like gay bars, either! It sounds like you've been to better ones than we have, clearly.

I figured that the ones I've been to aren't representative of all of them, but the author did say "Any gay bar is, at heart, a pick-up joint."

I felt like an asshole for awhile because I couldn't STAND being in gay bars, but then I realized it's just because I don't like being any bar that feels like it's all about sex and hookups. I prefer bars that seem to be more just groups of friends, and any hookups that happen are incidental. Of course that means that

My grandma bought me a home seltzer-maker! It's amazing because I don't have to buy seltzer and also I CAN CARBONATE ANYTHING.

That was what we call "an example".

I had this same issue with it at first, but I don't anymore. As a person who gets paid to organize, I'm always very focused on 'what's the goal? how do we know we won?'. But as I've watched this movement grow, I've realized that that focus may be a big part of what holds us back. Because the issues that are plaguing

I didn't mean to chide people for not being involved, more for vocally stating they don't support it. People can have a lot of reasons not to be involved with Occupy, to skepticism about it's effectiveness to being busy with other things. . .personally, I'm not actively involved because though I'm an activist I've

I understand where your frustration's coming from, and I certainly don't think anyone's obligated to become deeply involved with Occupy Wall Street. I just worry that people who would have great potential to educate people about that systemic racism and make the movement stronger are opting out. I think a lot of

Remember how this protest is motivated by the screwed up state of the economy? You know, where PEOPLE DON'T HAVE JOBS?

True- but this is also a great opportunity to educate people who've never been involved in a social movement about the history of injustice. "I never until now realized that we lived in a police state" is a GREAT opportunity to say "Yeah, we do. And here's a million examples of how this has been happening to people of

She didn't say it would have been OK for black people to liken student loan debt to slavery either. The point was that the whole comparison is inappropriate. I don't think anyone wants the monopoly on 'slavery rhetoric'.

I completely agree that issues of race within the movement need to be addressed, but what I can't get behind is the "I can't support the movement because people of color have been dealing with this for years and only now have white middle class people started to care" (I didn't see this in the article, but in some of

Aw, that's a great story. I wish everyone had exactly that reaction when confronted with their power and privilege.

Actually there's been a huge amount of people who identify as the 1% standing in solidarity with the 99%, and nobody cursing them out for it. That's not the point at all. [westandwiththe99percent.tumblr.com]

Ahhh, meeeeemories.
