Jupiter, and the other gas giants to a lesser extent, acts as a “comet catcher” due to its immense gravity, so without it we would have had a *great* deal more extinction level events. As is, it’s been ~65 million years. Without Jupiter, the frequency of impacts would likely increase by a couple of orders of magnitude…

I’m guessing the whole “sitting here for 100 years” comment was hyperbole. I imagine we’ll get some Bloodraven/Bryden Rivers (Targaryen bastard, tying him somewhat to R+L=J and making Jon a distant relation of his) exposition at some point. Max Von Sydow has been an excellent addition to the cast thus far.
