He picked Palpatine who eventually (potentially) murdered him. That seems like a pretty bad decision. Kylo doesn’t seem nearly as ambitious or malevolent (and far easier to control) as a younger Palpatine would have been.

Ventress actually died in one of the new canon books (Dark Disciple; dying to protect Quinlan Vos from Dooku and thus redeeming herself and him in the process). Doesn’t mean she couldn’t come back though.
