de Blasio isn’t eligible to run again; NYC mayors have a 2-term limit and he’s not rich like Bloomberg, so he can’t buy a 3rd term from the City Council.

While I’m not surprised, as West Virginia is really, really red, I am curious how they teach West Virginia’s break-off from Virginia during “The War of Northern Aggression.”
Yeah... West Virginia today is really red. Much more so than the state they broke away from, which is turning more blue as time goes by.
I get so crazy when people I know, who should know better, start up with, “Well, but there are so many MORE vaccines now than when we were kids...” Yes, of course there are! Because science, you fools!
Gadzooks, if I could have had the chicken pox vaccine... and Scotland has vastly reduced cervical cancer in women who…
The summer after my freshman year in high school, I went to the south of France to study French for the month of July in beautiful Avignon. I registered for the program months before the end of the school year, when things were going well, but by the time the school year ended, I was in a tough emotional place- my…
I got them at age 15, right as summer vacation started. You’re right; no child should have to go through it, and definitely no teenager. I made sure my kid got both of the immunization shots for it. The thought that he will never have to deal with shingles, either, makes me happy.
I moved into an old tenement building in NYC that I did not know was overrun with mice until I started noticing that my underwear were getting holes in the crotches. While they were folded in my underwear drawer.
As soon as I started watching the video I could tell what had happened before (that she was refusing to leash her poorly behaved dog). I found his FB post about the incident, and, as an NYC dog owner who is frequently infuriated by dog owners who ignore the leash laws (and it’s been getting worse during the…
I would also have loved a few more seconds to see that basement, too! The movie is a pretty faithful adaptation of the book, and so I guess they didn’t want to put in anything verbally that wasn’t in the book, but boy did they do some cool things visually that opened all kinds of questions.
Having seen both films in the theater, I would have been glad to present as a witness in your defense at the trial.
What a great article; I loved reading this and now I want to go back and rewatch Seasons 1-4 (because the school season was GREAT). I think Stringer Bell is the Icarus of The Wire. Had he not been so desperate to go legit, he would have continued along as he was, but, like D’Angelo, he also, ultimately, wanted out,…
I saw the movie 3 times in the theater, and dozens of times on video. It’s about as perfect as a horror movie gets. I’m looking back on almost 30 year old memories now, and it was the early 1990s, so much less was understood by cisgender folk like me about gender non-conformity, but I recall not thinking that Gumb…
Yeah, I hear you on that. Someone, on this site I think it was, pointed out that had they pulled the same prank at their office party (photographed pretending to grope a passed-out colleague), they’d have been fired before work resumed Monday morning. It’s not unreasonable to hold Senators to the same standard as the…
Right? I assume she saw the opportunity to make some sponsorship $$ and the media was lazy enough to pick the story up.
Yes. For better or worse, these allegations aren’t going to mean anything in terms of who wins the election, but if they turn into enough of a scandal AFTER the election (when, assuming a Democrat wins, we will see the media suddenly, magically, start holding the Administration accountable for everything from sex…
My neighbor had Covid 19 in late March and treated it with rest and lots of Gatorade. And was sick for... 9 days, just like Cuomo.
Yes! As a kid, that was one of the boring chapters for me, but as an adult, it’s one of my favorites.
I love that section, too! And how the husband gets huffy about it and won’t hire him for awhile but his wife takes up complaining about every other cab he hires until he finally agrees that she can hire Jerry’s cab again. A nice little resolution to the working man standing up for himself.
I reread this book every year or so; I also have loved it since childhood. I think Sewell says some very timeless things about religion (and the hypocrisy of some who practice it), and class, and humanity. For all that Black Beauty starts out working for the aristocracy, I think the longest section of the book is…
True. I was in NYC, I remember Rudy saying, “Oh, heeeyyyyy, how about we delay the Mayoral election for a while so I can stay on and guide us through this terrible-” and NYC interrupting to tell him to geddafukouttaheah.
