I remember a girl the year above me getting pregnant in middle school. I remember people saying that she’d been having an affair with an older guy. I think it might’ve been her babysitter? There were all sorts of whispers around school, and she ended up leaving school partway through the year. She couldn’t have been…
I have a very clear memory, from when I was about 12, of my mother angrily telling me about a family we knew from church, and how their horrible daughter, who was a few years years older than me, had “ruined her family” by reporting that her stepfather had molested her. It didn’t even occur to my mother, or anyone…
Thank you for writing about this. I remember in the 7th grade that there was an 8th girl, kind of popular and already developing, who was rumored to be “having an affair” with the PE teacher/football coach. I remember at that time that we blamed her - that we thought she was a “slut,” that we though she had enough…
This a million times. People forget that your bridal party is doing YOU a favor. I cannot believe the expectations people are ok placing on people because it’s your wedding. I remember having this conversation with a recently engaged girl I know:
“encouraged shoppers to use fitting rooms for their god-given purposes”.
My office is over the parade route (literally the first building) and walking into work a couple of hours before the parade was amazing. I was tearing up at all the girls in their jerseys and tutus and signs and american flags! There were little boys there too, which is great because it is so important for them to be…
Gothamist has some great photos of early birds this morning; I love the ones with the sanitation worker and the dad playing soccer with his girls (I think the one in blue is also the young lady in the last pic above).
It is BEAUTIFUL! I knit and crochet, now I want to tat!
HEY THAT’S ME! I MADE THAT! True life, I cried a little bit when I got it in the mail, and I’m pretty sure I’ve never seen my father look at me with such pride.
I could not read that article without rolling my eyes hard. The dad loves making himself the victim and, even if the things that happened are true, he didn’t seem to express concern about his children being in juvenile detention for not wanting to see him.
Plus! Plus! If you read through the actual transcript, all three of these kids seem incredibly brave and willing to stand up to the judge (WHO IS SUCH A FUCKING BULLY IT’S UNREAL) and to their dad, who is just standing there, not doing shit. At one point, after the 15-year-old is taken away, the 9- and 10-year-olds…
Yeah... She’s in full support of women ... but please “I’m not a feminist”! Means there’s something wrong with being a feminist.
I’d like to. I don’t know how this misconception about what humanism means got started, but it’s very annoying.
Are you? because Humanism is not what she says it is, the word you are looking for the describe her feelings that everyone should be equal is feminism.
Yeah the word you’re looking for is egalitarian, not humanist. Humanism is a belief system based on the belief that humans can sort themselves out without rules from a divine being & focuses on rationalism and empiricism over deism. Egalitarianism is the correct term for people that believe everyone needs a little…
Except they’re two significantly different things; to even suggest one is an alternative to the other illustrates a fundamental ignorance of both. I think before anything else changes, we should make it illegal to form and share opinions about a subject without at least reading its Wikipedia entry. I’m so tired of…
Can we ban people who don't effing know what humanism is from using the word in conversation or nah?
I was raised in an atheist household (I'm 25 now), and I'm always surprised at how uncommon it is. I know lots of atheists, but all of them came to their atheism as teenagers or adults. I don't know anyone else with atheist parents.
