Forgot to include another article, one which hits at an important points: at high speeds and low congestion levels, yes, late merge is less effective. However, at higher levels of congestion and lower speeds the late merge is more effective.

I resent your statement that my argument was needlessly reductive, it is nothing of the sort. I am a traffic engineer, and the concept truly is that simple. More open lanes results in a higher capacity and greater utilization of the roadway, more cars will move at a higher average speed over the length of the work…

I find it helps to think about it this way, what road can fit more cars? A one lane road or two lane road? If everyone merged early you have a one lane road, the zipper merge allows two lanes of traffic for longer, speeding everyone up and increasing the capacity of the road.
