Alum here- female final clubs are relatively new to campus (early 2000s), as are sororities (sororities only really starting growing in popularity around 2012-2013 when I graduated). Some female final clubs were bankrolled by men who were displeased that their daughters couldn’t join the club they used to be in. The…
That may be an issue with the way your college prioritizes financial aid. If you are receiving the full Pell Grant ($5,775) that is the most you can get in grant money directly from the Federal Government. If your state or college has specific grant funds for low-income students or if you’re eligible for merit aid,…
My only tiny quibble with their numbers is that undocumented and DACA students don’t fill out FAFSA, but often do graduate from high school, so there’s a little wiggle room there. Otherwise this is great and is something I think about all the time in my work as a college counselor (you may be able to tell from my…
Only biological or step-parent info goes on the FAFSA, so you might have gotten a little extra money from state schools. Private schools would have taken the trust money into account in your aid package.
Merit based aid that is not based on any income anything is not going to get pulled if you file a FAFSA. However, many colleges will withhold merit aid if you don’t file a FAFSA- it’s usually a requirement for getting aid.
That’s not how dependency for FAFSA works- there are a very small set of specific circumstances (that require documentation) that would allow a student under 24 to be considered independent.
naw sports lose money for most colleges- only the top tier schools get anything out of it. http://chronicle.com/interactives/n…
As a college counselor I can tell you that for-profits cost WAYYY more than public schools for the same degree. You’re often looking at the difference between $25,000 at a for-profit and $8,000 at a community college for an associates degree or $23,000 vs $6,000 for auto diesel tech certification. Public education is…
Yeah she was really just trying to stir the pot- she knew this was going to cause controversy. There wasn’t really a reason for her to respond to that email- that’s like responding to an email about a ballet concert and saying “BALLET IS BORING” which is totally an opinion people are allowed to have and say but like…
I mean, they’re not completely apolitical, but it’s a big deal when they are political bc they’re seen as representatives of the university/house vs representatives of their own personal beliefs.
I’m super over the “you go to a competitive school be grateful for your scholarships and shut up” thing. I was medium annoyed by Occupy Harvard but ending up defending them all the time bc people’s anti-occupy arguments were “You’re on financial aid so you shouldn’t complain.”
I think what’s missing from this conversation is the context in which the email was sent- it is really really really weird for a house master to send that kind of email over a listserve. The role of the house master is to be apolitical quasi-parents who occasionally host students for social events in their house and…
I’ve got students (usually the ones who are in the IB program) who exploit these dress code policies by wearing the wrong shade on purpose so they get sent to ISS and have extra time to study for tests. If you ask them what they think their school’s number one priority is, they’ll say “enforcing dress code”
This is right around the corner from the library where I run ACT Prep- thankfully last week was the last week for the summer session. As a lifelong Nashvillian, it saddens me to see this happen, particularly in an area that has been struggling for so long.
