at least over the board, it seems like a way more solvable problem than PEDs in sports. online though... sadly i could see what you described really happening there. i hope not though
which do you think is more likely: 1) a 31-year-old who is known for excellent sportsmanship suddenly became “grumpy with age” and took out his frustrations on a 19-year-old for no good reason, something he has never even remotely done before,
it sounds like what you’re getting at is, “magnus loses to someone. he then cynically uses their past as a cheater to accuse them of further cheating, with absolutely zero basis, purely because he has an out-of-control ego.”
Here’s an interview from a year ago where he discusses this. It’s an interesting insight into how problematic and difficult to detect cheating can be when done cleverly. You might want to turn on the subtitles for it
i agree that magnus is not handling the situation correctly, and the criticism of those actions is valid. it’s the way people use it to characterize him as someone who’s “just being a baby,” “just a sore loser,” or “throwing a hissy fit” that i find unreasonable. it seems to me that he is clearly motivated by a…
i’m not sure what you mean by this
this is a common interpretation but i think it’s not a totally fair one. magnus has lost before and has never been like this before, ever. only in this one case has he ever been like this... and the opponent in question is indeed a known cheater. the idea that magnus just can’t handle losing doesn’t really add up at…
i think it is very reasonable to be very worried about cheating in chess, a game in which cheating is in fact a known large problem...
i’m kind of the opposite, where i am able to relate to that desire to a good extent. the feeling of getting attention for saying something ‘funny’ or ‘smart’ is a good feeling to me. it’s nice being the center of attention at like a party or whatever, every once in a while. that’s exactly what makes it so angering to…
really great article! it really seems like a big challenge to address these problems right now
it does seem that social media may contribute to the problem though
I’m not rich, but I sometimes give my money to game devs, journalists, artists, etc, for them to be able to do more of what they do. If I did this with the idea of ultimately earning a profit off of them working to make what they make, I wouldn’t really be able to characterize that as me ‘helping’ anyone
so the thing about entering a business is, it is about business. if this succeeds, he will profit massively from it. so the idea that he is doing this primarily out of a desire to help people, while i’m sure he believes it himself, is something that warrants skepticism always
i see people legit saying ‘magnus is washed up’ and i’m just reminded of the fighting game community. person gets second place once and they’re ‘washed up,’ i cry when i see it lol
huge amounts of kids are really big into twitch streams and stuff, so whether the original intent is for kids or not is kind of not relevant imo? what’s important is that kids have regular access to this stuff. it is important to consider what things we want to be accessible to kids, how accessible we want those…
it’s known that he has cheated online, so i think it’s unclear whether the chess.com thing is just because of those previous incidents or not. i could be wrong though
as someone who started with putt-putt and has nothing but love for him, i’m afraid freddi is untouchable
hahahaha i was literally going to say ‘dont worry, if it’s a jim cornette avatar it instantly means the person has no idea what theyre talking about’
oh yeah we’re definitely being forced. i think it’s kind of a combination of being basically forced, but also being conditioned to accept things that have been forced upon us because ‘that’s just how it is.’
