Not to mention that you never know what might happen in a marriage. People who are financially dependent on their spouses have many fewer options if their spouse decides to have an affair, for example. It's always good for both people to have their own source of income.

Yep. This one little anecdote says it all. Anyone who wants to know the reason behind this trend can just read this one sentence. Men want the fun parts of parenthood while mom still cleans and cooks and changes diapers, but a lot of women have gotten wise to the fact that the burdens of parenthood will fall squarely

Ha, ha, exactly! I had a lot of open relationships in my twenties as well. Now at age 40 I'm doing well to just get the dishes done every day, much less manage group dating and endless talks about everyone's feelings and jealousy.

I agree. Throughout the whole first half of this (pre "Sex At Dawn"), I just kept thinking, "oh, girl, no". If her model of monogamy is some kind of Disney-fied uber-romance Someday-My-Prince-Will-Come nonsense, of COURSE she had trouble with her monogamous relationships. She could have done a lot of things to move

Yeah, Saybrook is pretty much a joke.

LOL! Awesome! I love this.

I am very much looking forward to this year's tour - have floor seats for NOLA in May!

We've had our Lodge cast iron pans for a year now and they have replaced all our other pans as our "go-to" cooking implements. I have been nothing but pleased with them.

Yes, it is pretty terrible. Some days I have to just pass on articles like this one, because I know that reading all the chirpy comments about how great polyamory is, how poly people are all so honest and sweet and enlightened, etc. will just be like a massive stab wound to the heart.

By the way, I am totally following you on Kinja now, because you seem awesome.

Yeah, polyamory is totally the new veganism, complete with the smug side-eye about everyone else's personal choices. It's an incredibly irritating behavior no matter what it's about - sex, food, religion, whatever.

I am actually a female Rush fan. :-)

Seriously. I wish I could star this comment like 8000 times.

That totally happened to me on a job search a couple of years ago. I met 95% of the basic requirements for the position as advertised. As part of the application process, I had to do a checklist at the very end, after I had already uploaded and filled in etc etc etc for an hour, and I didn't check a box for one random

A general, very applied high school course on the scientific method and using critical thinking skills to evaluate information would go a long way towards helping people deal with the kinds of topics you mention here, without ever having to sit through World History 1, 2, and 3.

This is all true, but the average person needs to know how to change a flat tire and not get ripped off by the mechanic. Taking Physics 101 will not assist them with those very concrete life needs.

Word to all of this. I have a Ph.D., and hand to God, the only truly useful class I ever took outside of grad school was typing, in high school. If I were Empress of the Universe and could develop a universal high school curriculum, it would consist of 25% academics, and 75% useful life-relevant classes, like, "How to

Awwwww. Couldn't have happened to a nicer guy!

I often like to taunt my northern friends with my Floridian weather. Since the state is basically one big punchline to a national joke (cf. "crocodile infested meth emporium"), the nice weather is the only thing we can really be proud of and I'm going to milk it for all it's worth.
