Had to fight over the campus TV with a girl complaining about Adventure Time with the

Whitewashing complaints are generally justified.
So The Lone Ranger got an A+ from you?
If you think animated films are "by definition" marketed to children
your definition is screwed up. There is nothing about drawn, sculpted, or computer-generated images that screams "for kids!" I should hope that Akira, South Park, and Waltz With Bashir were never marketed to children.
Or, you know, Miyazaki might simply be the best anime director around and so awesome that people who generally aren't interested in other anime like his movies. But they're still animation from Japan, so technically anime.

If you want a good anime recommendation for something that's still airing in Japan and streaming on Crunchyroll and Hulu in the US, Attack on Titan. Seriously addictive.
He's friends with John Lasseter, so I doubt he hates technology on principle, just more frustrated with modern life in general.
Might be hard, but I bet you Carl Dreyer's The Passion of Joan of Arc can make that easier.
So Toonami's surprise was Kick-Heart. As one of the short's crowdfunders, that pleased me.
