The "we actually survived" narration at the end of Arrietty wasn't in the original either. Would have been nice if they didn't have to force that in, but here in America the original uncertain ending would be incredibly daring.
Ah, but the issue with Michael Bay is that he's a hack who makes movies with no substance. But in a movie like, say, The Avengers or Kill Bill, even an incredibly minimal bit of substance is enough to make gratuitous action a lot of fun.
