@avclub-404bfdece06f0fc5ba56bef1e19d8896:disqus : So movies and paintings, not appropriate for grown-ups then? All those pictures!

Burton hasn't been in a steady decline, more of a career with varying peaks and valleys (we're in one of the latter right now, unfortunately). However, it's clear he needs some sort of trauma in his life to respond to (or at least a genius collaborator a la Paul Reubens, Henry Selick, or Steven Sondheim) in order to

It's genuine stop-motion, probably with minimal CGI effects for more difficult scenes. 3D in stop-motion isn't really much more burdensome than just doing stop-motion period and the two techniques are a great fit for each other as Coraline proved.

So he's an otherkin then?

Which makes the disappointing takes of Arrietty, Pirates Band of Misfits, and John Carter all the more disappointing.

Story under the radar: it looks like in a day or two The Hunger Games is going to surpass Deathly Hallows Part II's box office, meaning it will have domestically outgrossed all of the Harry Potter movies and sold more tickets than all but Sorcerer's Stone. Wonder how that ended up happening; Hunger Games is popular

IM3? You've traveled to the future and seen it? Or do you mean IM2?

Rogers/Thor: Captain Hammer

I figure I'll watch Sherlock and then immediately after log on to HBOGo to catch up with Game of Thrones. With these two shows, Korra, and new anime from the creator of Cowboy Bebop this is a pretty busy time to be a geek watching stuff.

A case where cancellation improved a show: the original Mobile Suit Gundam. It as supposed to be a full 52 episodes but awful ratings got it cut down to 39 episodes. The staff fought for an additional month to finish up the story and got 43 episodes in the end. That last month of episodes is easily the most exciting

Also watch "The Prisoner of Benda." It's even more excellent. So excellent they invented a whole new mathematical theorem to make it work. http://theinfosphere.org/Fu…

Doctor Who?

@avclub-40e90db13ab31c7efd64228034182c2e:disqus : 2050s Captain America can be in ice for 100 years. It worked with Aang. Maybe throw some Thor magic in there for some raisin if that's more believable.

One instance of pure CGI amazement that I forgot: District 9. I was shocked to find out the prawns weren't at least partially prosthetic.

I wonder though, people could do anything with animation since forever. Yet every time a Pixar or Ghibli movie comes out we let ourselves be wowed. Why's it harder with SFX? We are definitely at the point where we need to be wowed by creativity rather than technical virtuosity or scale, though: the relatively cheap

The combination of practical effects and CGI for a lot of the Pan's Labyrinth/Hellboy monsters and the Wild Things were amazing. Also Speed Racer and Scott Pilgrim.
