TBH, this makes me want to immigrate to NL. And I live in California! Hopefully I will get to visit someday. 

I know a handful of refugees in the US, mostly from Syria, and they have the exact same mentality - they love America and they want to learn English as fast as possible to get a job / improve their English even when they’ve learned enough to get a job.

Is it odd that your next wave of immigrants may be American? My wife and I are trying to move to Germany/Switzerland/Netherlands. 

I mean... it makes sense that when people have their basic needs taken care of they are less likely to desperately steal to literally just barely exist.

In my very brief time in Germany a few weeks ago, all the taxi/Uber drivers I encountered were Syrian migrants.  They all loved Germany and talked about how the language is hard to learn but they enjoy the courses.  Small sample size yes, but it’s possible that immigrants into Europe just want to work and make a good…

Brexit is a mess. The people who demanded it either had completely unrealistic expectations of what we will get at the end of it or they’re willing to walk away with no deal and screw up the entire country in the name of “sovereignty.”

The tour guide told us, when we were in Amsterdam, that houses on canals were taxed based on their width and not overall size, so that made for the narrow frontages. Is that true?

Presumably the tall & narrow houses with the ridiculous staircases also helps to keep people fitter and therefore happier. Or is that just Amsterdam? Also the fitness thanks to all the cycling.

Also, EU countries don’t have a systemic, for-profit judicial system that allows swathes of society (particularly of minorities) to be charged with minor crimes, incarcerated when they can’t meet bail, jailed for misdemeanors, and then denied education and advancement because they have criminal records.

Wait just a minute. You’re telling me that when you treat people - no matter their nationality or ethnic background - as fellow humans deserving of respect and dignity, they tend to reciprocate and participate in a civil society?
