I’m sure it was quite functional and served well as a family hauler, but the overall appearance was compromised due to the minivan platform it is built on.
The 1997-2003 Malibu and later called Classic from in 2004 and 2005, was the particular model my comment was aimed at. Although I have zero love for the later model years, I would have to agree that they were a better car.
Which is very common here in Maine.
